Looking out to the backyard from Tree House by Retallack Thompson doesn’t feel like being in Sydney’s inner-west.
The recently updated house was actually informed by the backyard, specifically its 20-metre-tall lemon scented gum that essentially ruled out the ability to extend the property.
By extending the roof of the building all the way to the rear, the architects were able to unlock space on the 225-square-metre site, to feature four bedrooms plus a study over three levels.
The ‘least good parts’ of the home were optimised, introducing a sunken lower ground floor that immerses the living area in the garden.
