What to Wear to a BBQ

With Memorial Day right around the corner, barbecue season is here. Officially! While great fun, BBQs can be tricky to style for. They are a party, which may involve seeing family you haven’t seen in a while or meeting new friends of friends, so you’ll definitely not want to compromise style.

The biggest thing to be mindful of when dressing for an outdoor celebration is your hemlines (in case you want to sit cross-legged on that picnic blanket), your accessories (superlong necklaces can be cumbersome), and your choice of footwear (heels sinking into grass are never a good thing). We’re helping you find the perfect fashion formula by styling up three examples of what to wear when you’re invited to an outdoor bash.

Whether you are attending a casual cookout or an elaborate backyard barbecue, we have your warm-weather wardrobe taken care of for this upcoming weekend.

Overalls are perfect for this season, and a backyard bash is the perfect time to get in on the trend. Wear yours over a slouchy striped tee, then add a sleek pair of flat sandals. A fun, baseball cap looks cool, sporty, and laid-back.

Shake things up for a poolside party or beach BBQ — instead of your go-to denim cutoffs, why not try a breezy pair of printed shorts? Layer your bikini with an open-knit sweater (it’ll come in handy when the temperature drops), and don’t forget to protect your face from the sun with a rad pair of mirrored sunglasses.

A lightweight chambray dress is our personal barbecue favorite. You can dress it up or down, depending on the time of day, and it always looks chic and put-together. If you’re headed to a party on the patio, nothing looks cooler or more Summer-ready than a pair of sneakers and retro-chic shades — add a fun printed tote bag and you’re set!
