A Brief History of Anthropologie

Anthropologie is one of those few stores that appeals to women of every age —whether you go for the store’s unique party-dress selection, its delicious sleepwear, or its expert curation of home and beauty goods, it’s impossible to leave the store empty-handed. Here are some brief history facts about one of our favorite brands!

Anthropologie was actually founded by the same people who founded Free People and Urban Outfitters—a man named Richard Hayne, his wife Judy Wick, and their business partner, Scott Belair. After opening FP and UO in the ’70s, Hayne and crew went on to open Anthropologie in the year 1992 in Wayne, Pennsylvania.

The name Anthropologie was inspired by Richard Hayne’s college degree in—which was—anthropology, combined with his major in French. Anthropologie’s in-house collections are based around three imaginary women—each one with a name and characteristics that apply to the store’s central aesthetics: Feminine, Artistic, and Linear.
