History in Fashion: Oscar Dresses

In honor of the 87th Academy Awards show, here is a quick history of the greatest style moments in Oscar history.

Each year at the Oscars, actresses walk the red carpet hoping to make a lasting, positive impression — but only a handful of dresses have had a lasting impact on both Hollywood and fashion, bringing sudden fame to the actresses who wore them and transforming their designers’ reputation.

Last year British site MediaRun Digital created an illustrated history of the gowns worn by every single Best Actress winner since 1929. We decided to take a look at the dresses of the first ten Oscar winning actresses.

Janey Gaynor, 1929 – Oscar winner for her role in 7th Heaven

Mary Pickford, 1930 – Oscar winner for her role in Coquette

Marie Dressler, 1931 – Oscar winner for her role in Min and Bill

Helen Hayes, 1932 – Oscar winner for her role in The Sin of Madelon Claudet

Bette Davis, 1936 – Oscar winner for her role in Dangerous

Luise Rainer, 1937 & 1938 – Two time Oscar winner for her in The Great Ziegfeld and The Good Earth

Bette Davis, 1939 – Oscar winner for her role in Jezebel

Vivien Leigh, 1940 – Oscar winner for her role in Gone with the Wind
