On Trend: A Folk Story

Perhaps the must-have item this season is a peasant dress — the seventies folk trend is set to be a huge success for 2015.

The mood may be primitive but the details are sublime.

Beautiful embroideries, ethnic prints, rich earthy tones and a gorgeous play on texture are sure to turn this trend into an irresistible movement. This trend is all about mixing traditional motifs with modern silhouettes, appearing to be carved straight from the pages of a fairy tale.

At the Alexander McQueen show this past fall, fairies and witches were the basic concentration on the runway, including some very impressive all-white semi-transparent dresses, adorned with mythical images of the stars, moon and sun. Another great ethnic folk inspiration was put forward with the surprising Polo Ralph Lauren fashion show, which featured moody color and shape interpretations used for dresses, and paired with sheepskin jackets. The synthesis of modern with folk was a perfect combination.

Whether you can envision yourself wearing an embroider gilet or Anna Sui’s patterned coat with fringe, this relaxed look is everywhere. Look for decorative details and artisanal accessories — a cue for nomadic travels. Let this trend be your go-to this winter.
