How To Clean Your Makeup Brushes

It’s that time of year again; we’re ready to open all the windows and let in the spring sunshine. Spring cleaning is upon us and although we might be quick to clean out our closets and dust off our shelves, we should also clean those everyday products we might otherwise forget.

After a few weeks of using your makeup brushes, your face’s natural oil, makeup, and other germs will start to build up. Cleaning the brushes from time to time keeps all that grime from getting transferred to your face, and it also makes the brush bristles softer and more effective. Also applying products with dirty applicators can clog pores and spread bacteria, causing breakouts!  Keep your skin clear and clean by washing your foundation brushes at least once a week, brushes for the eyes at least twice a month, and all other brushes can be washed once a month. We’re breaking down the simple steps below. And remember: high-quality brushes are a worthwhile investment! Try Real Techniques from Ulta.

Products you’ll need:

  • Sulfate free baby shampoo or Dr. Bronners – we love M.A.C’s Brush Cleanser
  • Running water
  • Clean towel for drying
  • Rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle

1) Wet brush. Keeping the tip of the brush pointed down, apply shampoo or cleanser from the palm of your hand onto the brush. Swirl the bristles around in your hand, then rinse thoroughly.

2) Repeat the above process until the water runs clear.

3) Squeeze the excess water out of the brush.

4) You can also lightly spritz the damp brush with rubbing alcohol to eradicate any lingering germs.
