Everyone knows the world is obsessed with looking younger, more beautiful, and more “refreshed” or “replenished.” But what happens when this obsession goes too far, and people start seeking increasingly extreme beauty products to achieve their ideal look? Well, according to The Guardian, snail mucus has made its way into the beauty industry, appearing in creams, serums, and lotions. The snail beauty market is projected to reach $3.4 billion in 2034, underscoring the impact of this new anti-aging product. Snails aren’t the only animals contributing to the beauty community: according to the BBC, bird poop facials have made their way into spas across the world. Nightingale’s poop, called uguisu no fun, is a powder now incorporated into skin treatments. This strange powder helps the skin retain moisture and protect against sun damage. Spas have not stopped at these poop facials, as according to CBS News, snake massages have been growing in popularity, especially in places like Russia and Thailand. These massages can be performed by snakes such as boa constrictors and are said to be therapeutic, increasing blood flow and relieving stress. There is no end to what the beauty industry will market as a new product, as evidenced by the increasing popularity of odd ingredients such as bird poop and snail mucin. It is important to know what ingredients one is putting on their face and always consider the ethics of new and different products. (Whitney Hoffacker)
