Wellness Wednesday: Are weighted vests worth it?

CHICO, Calif. – Weighted vests are becoming a popular trend in the fitness world. This week, Action News Now explored whether these vests are worth the investment.Weighted vests are designed to improve bone density by adding extra weight to the body. However, health experts recommend starting with a vest that is about 10% of your body weight and using it for balanced exercises like walking.Health experts advise against using weighted vests for tasks like housework, as it could lead to back strain.Recent research on weighted vests has shown mixed results. A 2025 clinical trial found that wearing a weighted vest for about 7 hours a day did not prevent hip bone loss in obese older adults.Follow-up studies suggested that weighted vests might help maintain weight loss, even when worn while resting, as the body uses more energy to support the extra weight. Weighted vests could also potentially help with balance, though the evidence is not definitive. The key takeaway is to use weighted vests as a supplement to walking and strength training, rather than as a replacement for lifting weights. Experts say resistance training remains the most effective method to support strength, function, and bone health.
