Smith Packing is recalling nearly 19,000 pounds of ready-to-eat sausage and sliced meats due to high levels of sodium nitrite. The chemical, often used in meat preservation, can be deadly at excessive levels. While no illnesses have been reported, the USDA urges consumers to check their fridges immediately.
